Nicknames, usernames, and X

Understand why nicknames cannot be registered and how an Undernet username identifies you to X.

Undernet deliberately does not provide nickname ownership. Anyone may use a nickname while it is available.

An Undernet username is different. It is an account managed by Channel Service and used to authenticate to X.

What a username provides

  • Access to registered channels where you have been added
  • The ability to support or submit a channel application when eligible
  • Account-based identification independent of your current nickname
  • Access to Channel Service's web management tools

Register and manage usernames through the CService website, not through a nickname-registration command.

After connecting to IRC, authenticate with:

/msg X@channels.undernet.org LOGIN username password

Send credentials only to the exact service address shown above. A person using the nickname X is not the service.
